How to change a sink faucet fixture ?

While some plumbing jobs require professional help, others can be done yourself. Here are the different steps to easily change the sink faucet fixture.

Start by taking measurements

Once you have found the model of faucet you want to install on your sink, you will need to take measurements. The purchase of a mixer must in fact be preceded by a measurement of the center distance. This is the distance between the center of the two tap holes. Since this is a single-hole faucet, you need to know its diameter. In fact, most of this equipment has a standard diameter.

Examine the piping

Before replacing the valve, always check the condition of the piping. Connection hoses and supply hoses are the things you need to focus on. To do this, loosen the drain hose to see if the sealing washers are still functional. If this is not the case, the piping will also need to be replaced.

Shut off the water supply

As soon as you have in your possession all the necessary equipment to change the tap on your sink, you must turn off the water supply. This involves closing the valve which is usually located under the sink. In case you cannot find it there, you must turn off the main water supply which is outside the house. Then, open the tap to drain the water that is in the distribution piping.

Remove the old faucet

Once all the water is drained, you can remove the faucet from the sink by separating it from the supply hose. Keep in mind that some installations can be flexible, while others are more difficult to pull off. Also, put a bucket underneath to catch any water that may remain in the drains. Since your sink has a mechanical drain, remove the actuator from the lever. Then use an adjustable wrench to remove the fastening system.

Install the new faucet

In order to be able to correctly assemble your new faucet, it is essential that you use the instructions supplied with the product. Indeed, the mounting system of equipment can vary from one manufacturer to another. It is, therefore, necessary to know the indications for a product and to respect them for a quality installation. Subsequently, you must use mastic or silicone sealant to secure the faucet. Put it at the base and insert the butts. Place the mounting nuts, as well as the supply pipes. Avoid over-tightening.

Make the final adjustments

After installing the faucet, all you have to do is connect the supply hose to the shut-off valve. It is best to use your hands to tighten the nuts. For installations with a mechanical drain, remember to reattach the actuator to the lever, before screwing in the retaining nut. Once everything is fixed, you can turn on the water supply that you previously closed. Drain the device then make sure that the valve is functioning correctly.
